چکیده
compared with those ofboth the general population and a cohort of viscose-rayon workers. Ratios of observed to expected deaths for lung cancer in the two industrial populations (65 observed) were found to be elevated in both comparisons (1.4 in respect of both the general population (95% confidence interval (CI), 1. 1 1.8) and the viscose-rayon workers (1.0-2.0)) and tended to be concentrated in workers who had been employed for less than five years. Data from the US Beryllium Case Registry, in which cases of beryllium-related lung diseases were collected from a wide variety of sources (inc1uding the two facilities previously mentioned), indicate an approximately three-fold (six deaths observed, 2.1 expected; ratio of observed:expected, 2.9 (95% CI, 1.0-6.2)) increase in mortality from lung cancer among subjects who had suffered from acute beryllosis, which usually follows heavy exposure to beryllium, but not among those who had had chronic berylliosis (one death observed, 1.4 expected; ratio of observed:expected, 0.7; 95% CI, 0.1 -3.7).

Beryllium and Beryllium Compounds
Beryllium (atomic number, 4; relative atomic mass, 9.01) is a metal, which belongs to Group IIA of the Periodic Table. The oxidation state of beryllium compounds is +2. Selected chemical and physical properties of beryllium, beryllium– aluminium and beryllium–copper alloys, and various beryllium compounds can be found in the previous IARC Monograph (IARC, 1993). Beryllium is the lightest of all...

متن کاملA mortality study of beryllium workers
We aimed at investigating mortality among beryllium-exposed workers, according to solubility of beryllium and beryllium compounds. We conducted an historical cohort study of 16,115 workers employed during 1925-2008 in 15 facilities, including eight entailing exposure to insoluble beryllium and seven entailing exposure to soluble/mixed beryllium compounds, who were followed up for mortality unti...

The toxic action of beryllium eompounds has been studied extensively in the last few years. In many such compounds the harmful effect is due to the anion. An example is seen in the case of the double fluoride of sodium and beryllium which is often used in industry. However it is quite certain that the action of such compounds has an action of its own which was observed long ago (Siem, 1886; Com...
متن کاملBeryllium Metal II. A Review of the Available Toxicity Data
Beryllium metal was classified in Europe collectively with beryllium compounds, e.g. soluble salts. Toxicological equivalence was assumed despite greatly differing physicochemical properties. Following introduction of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation, beryllium metal was classified as individual substance and more investigational effort...
